Winnipeg, Treaty 1 Territory – On Friday 6 December 2019, the Government of First Nations in Treaty 2 Territory (FNT2T) and Treaty Relations Commission of Manitoba (TRCM) met to discuss the partnership forging ahead. Both the FNT2T and TRCM has been discussing a possible partnership for some time.
As per the letter sent to the commissioner earlier this summer, Grand Chief Eastman was very happy with the outcome of the meeting and a partnership to promote each other moving forward.
“The FNiT2T is interested in strengthening the public awareness of the Treaty relationship we have with the Crown represented by Canada, not only for our own First Nations people, but our Treaty partners, those being Canadian citizens. We have the intention to develop educational resources for our schools specific to the Treaty 2 Territory and have these available to the all educators. The development of a Treaty 2 Territory education kit will be a valuable initiative for both the FNiT2T and the TRCM to ensure that all educators are knowledgeable of the Treaty 2 Territory”, said Grand Chief Eastman
FNT2T is certainly aware of the TRCM Treaty Education Initiative (TEI) and the educational kit that was created, including the subsequent training that is required to acquire the kit. As the TRCM staff mentioned at a meeting earlier in the year, the TRCM has trained every provincial school division within Manitoba but has yet to achieve this 100% rate with the First Nations local controlled schools. FNT2T supports the TRCM within the Treaty 2 territory to establish training sessions for the educators of the all the Nation schools.
FNT2T has established a Treaty 2 Territory Speaker Bureau, with specific focus on the Treaty 2 territory and for the TRCM to support that work. The knowledge of the Treaty 2 Territory must reach across the territory and FNT2T feels the need to support the specialized historians and knowledge-keepers to provide that awareness and capacity support.
Final discussions was Treaty 1 and 2 will be 150 years old in 2021 and has yet to be implemented and with Unfinished treaty business as a key focus. TRCM to advocate after 150 years the Treaty to be implemented.
