Ikwewak Council – Oral Teaching Lodge, MMIWG Inquiry Final Report, Child and Family Services

June 17, 2019

Treaty 2 territory – The FNiT2T Ikwewak Council of women met on Monday, June 17th, 2019  to discuss obtaining oral teachings on our ancestral laws and original ways of being, the MMIWG Inquiry Final Report, and Child and Family Services.

A longhouse teaching lodge will be constructed on Friday, July 5, 2019 at the Medicine Camp in Riding Mountain and the teachings will continue inside the lodge once the lodge is built and carry on for July 6 and 7. All are welcome. An invite notice will be posted shortly.

The Council will be hosting a MMIWG information session in July 2019 to discuss the final report from the inquiry and this session will also include men and boys, and LGBTQ and two-spirited. Watch for the notice.

A statement will be issued from the Ikwewak Council shortly in terms of the original ways of being and the role of grandmothers and lifegivers. It is the grandmothers who oversee the family and the lifegivers who oversee the home. FNiT2T is working with ACFS and WRCFS and other external organizations to ensure we bring and keep our children home and in our families. Wellbeing and healing is what is required as part of restoring our jurisdiction and responsibilities for our families and children.
