Treaty 2 Territory – It was a beautiful day to have a meeting of the First Nations in Treaty 2 Territory Women Council on the land yesterday.
The Council and meeting participants enjoyed the camp grounds and visiting the newly constructed teaching lodge which will help facilitate the restoring and passing on the oral ancestral laws concerning our children, families and Nations. The Council was provided an update regarding ongoing FNT2T matters.
FNT2T Structural Transformation of Secretariats – in order to decolonize the FNT2T passed a Governing Council Resolution on August 7, 2019 transforming the FNT2T structure from Secretariats to Circles. The Children, Families, Extended Families and Nation Wellbeing is now the CHILDREN, FAMILIES & NATIONS CIRCLE. The Director is now a Circle Keeper.
FNT2T Law Development – Nation engagements have taken place to discuss placing oral ancestral laws into writing. Teachings Lodges will be used for some Nations in order to obtain these laws. Nation sessions will continue through the remainder of 2019 in order to put together a child and family law template. Watch out for the notice posters.
Funding Sources – FNT2T will continue to pursue funding to carry out law development, advocacy and support services, capacity building, and constructing wellness centres in each Nation.
Advocacy & Support Resources are urgently needed for children and families who are navigating the child welfare, justice, health, addiction recovery systems, and; flood evacuees, 60’s scoop survivors and day school survivors.
MMIWGT Information Sessions will be held in the local Nations now that the July 24, 2019 Dauphin session was carried out. The next block of meetings will be held in this order: Keeseekowenin First Nation, Skownan First Nation and Ebb and Flow First Nation. The remainder of the other Nations will be announced at a later date. Notices will be sent out for the MMIWGT Information Sessions to come. Safe spaces for women, girls and two-spirited are urgently needed. The matriarchal space for women must be restored in order for healing and balance to be restored.
Relationship Building in Child Welfare – discussion meetings will be underway between West Regions CFS, Anishinabe CFS and FNT2T in regards to establishing relations between the agencies and the Nations in order to achieve solutions concerning child welfare matters that maintain the wellbeing of the child and family and addressing gaps such as consistent policy approaches that are culturally appropriate.
Gender Discrimination through the Indian Act – Indian status that may be restored back to women and children dating back to 1869. This was announced on August 15, 2019 by Canada. However, it has not been made clear what funding resources will be attached to the Bill S-3 corrective measure and how Canada will support FNT2T with the transition process.
The Women Council will be presenting a report at the FNT2T Grand Council Session in Lake Manitoba First Nation during Aug 27-28, 2019. The Women Council will be presenting three resolutions to the Governing Council:
- Restoration of the Matriarchal Role in FNT2T
- Lateral Kindness Training Sessions for FNT2T Government, Councils and Staff
- Mother Earth is a live being in need of Protection
