Treaty 2 Territory – The Assistant/Researcher works within the Well-being of Children, Families, Community and Nation (WCFCN) Secretariat and reports to the WCFCN Manager of the Anishinaabe Agowidiiwinan Secretariat of the First Nations in Treaty 2 Territory Government. The WCFCN Assistant/Researcher works with the Community Developer collaboratively to support the development of laws specifically for the well-being of children, families, communities and Nation within the Treaty 2 Territory. The WCFCN Assistant/Researcher conducts the research to support the process of establishing a Territorial law for the protection and care of children and their families (may be also be known as the Child and Family System [CFS]) but is not limited to that. The Assistant/Researcher will assist in the development of collective community and nation well-being strategies with the intention to support community and nation well-being. The WCFCN Assistant/Researcher reports to the Senior Official of the Anishinaabe Agowidiiwinan Inc.

  • The Assistant/Researcher will work with the Manager of the WCFCN Secretariat to assistant in the developmental process for reforming the current CFS system locally and on a Treaty 2 Territory level;
  • Research laws and models relevant to CFS that have been developed in different jurisdictions;
  • Identify and analyze the state of the CFS system currently in place and brings forward recommendations for further growth and development;
  • Assists in the development of establishing new forms of child protection and care, family healing and wellness;
  • Research the scope and meaning for “Customary Care” from a First Nations perspective and relevant to the wellbeing of children, families, community and nation;
  • Assistant in the creation of a tool kit that will help the community with the process of creating their laws;
  • Assists in the development of community-oriented materials, posters, brochures, briefing notes, etc, for membership awareness and notice;
  • Assist in the recording, documenting and reporting on community interaction (committee mtgs, community mtgs, etc);
  • Assist in the development of stories for the Treaty 2 newsletter and other communication media;
  • Assist in accessing further funding;
  • Report as required;
  • Other as required.


  • Diploma or certificate and/or work experience in community development or similar;
  • Experience in research, writing, community development;
  • Facilitation skills and experience working/interacting with First Nations;
  • Good oral and visual presentation skills;
  • Valid Driver’s licence – Class 5 with reliable vehicle required;
  • Travel within Treaty 2 Territory will be a requirement;
  • Anishinaabe language and understanding of community culture an asset;
