Treaty 2 - August 21, 1871

Skownan moving forward with the development of a constitution

November 7, 2018

Skownan First Nation continue with constitutional development by having gathering today in their newly build Community Hall. Discussions included membership/citizenship and the creation of committee to review current draft constitution and prepare final draft for community view.

The overall structure of the government of First Nations in Treaty 2 Territory calls for all First Nations in Treaty 2 Territory to have the right to membership in the collective, but only those who develop their own community government constitutions actually become members. While that happens, a “temporary” or “provisional government” is in place.

Next meeting has been set for Monday, November 19, 2018 at 9:00am.

The Legislature of the People and the Government of the Nation

The right to govern belongs to the People. It is the People who decide the laws of the nation. This is done in a manner which the people have decided and set out in their own Constitution.

The Nation also must be governed pursuant to the Constitution which the People have adopted for the Nation. This responsibility is exercised by the Government established pursuant by the Constitution. It is the Government which executes the laws.
