Our Youth & Sport Council is the voice of our young members which brings together our Nations through activities and gathering. Treaty 2 recognizes the youth as a priority and vital contributors to the entire nation as they are our future leaders.
Accomplishments: For the first time, Treaty 2 Youth & Sport Council grouped at the end of Day 2 of Grand Council and Treaty gathering. It was exciting to listen to our youth of Treaty 2 speak on what they envision for their future. Their goals and mission were to learn their language, culture and traditions through land-based learning. They would like to see traditional sport incorporated. Councillor Xavier Gould-Pinaymootang and Councillor Jimmy Chartrand were in attendance and led the group. We had a total of 7 youth/participants.
Challenges: The positions of the Youth and Sport council need to be filled immediately, so Treaty 2 can get right into the planning and fundraising beginning stages. The Treaty 2 youth also stated that sports and recreation need to be inclusive to all youth. It appeared that there had been communication barriers of not only the Youth and Sport Council but Treaty on the Grand Council and Treaty Gathering. Since it’s a new council, this could be the reason why it has not been heard of.
Solutions: Communities need to select their Recreation representative. As lead of the Youth Council, I suggest that Treaty appoint a council member to avoid nepotism. Regarding communication, advertising and marketing needs to take place today to avoid and miscommunication with the Grand Council, Councils and especially the grassroots people of Treaty 2.
Upcoming: Pinaymootang to host Winter Games in 2020. It was also suggested to develop a financial structure and treasury board. The Treaty 2 Youth and Sport Council are in the process of applying for funding and are seeking sponsors or donations. The group would like to see a workplan developed. I assured it would be available to the public.
