Press Release of Grand Council and Treaty Gathering at Clear Lake 61A (28/29 August 2018)

Treaty 2 Territory – A historic gathering of the leaders and people of the Anishinaabe Agowidiiwinan Treaty 2 Grand Council was held at the Keeseekoowenin – Clear Lake 61a on August 28, 29, 2018. Although, the date had been rescheduled from August 20, 21, 2018, which had 275 registered, there was 150 participants attending for the new date. In attendance were the leaders, Elders, knowledge-keepers, women, and youth, through the Seven (7) Councils in the current structure who offered their knowledge, their recommendations and commitmentto building the Treaty 2 Territory Government.

Along with the reporting the governance work happening in the Treaty 2 Territory, discussions were held by each of the Councils (Chiefs, Elders, Women, Land & Water, Youth and Anishinabek). The Council of Chiefs of the Anishinaabe Agowidiiwinan – Treaty 2 also selected a new Grand Chief, through a consensus form of decision making, with the title of Grand Chief being handed over from Chief Norman Bone of Keeseekoowenin to Chief Eugene Eastman from O-Chi-Chak-Ko-Sipi First Nation.

Beyond the governance aspect of the gathering, recreational and entertainment was also provided by a Keeseekoowenin First Nation singer - Jeremy Bone, and renowned entertainer Gerry Barrett in his persona as “Ojibwe Elvis” and Anishinaabe the puppeteers – Ken Catcheway and Charolette Catcheway, who are Councillors from Skownan First Nation. As well, the Youth from Skownan First Nation conducted video recording and interviews of the people in attendance who are being mentored to this type of work by Freedom Studios. The event was also recorded by the Red Roots Productions and sound management conducted by Ray Mousseau from Ebb & Flow First Nation.

The host community – Keeseekoowenin looked after the food, grounds, security and maintenance. Hats off to Chief Norman Bone and the Special project office for the tasks at hand by the host community.

The Anishinaabe Agowidiiwinan and First Nations in Treaty 2 Territory also made the announcement for Winter Games to be held in 2020 to be hosted by Pinaymootang First Nation who volunteered to host the games. “Today is a great day for our youth, sport and Pinaymootang. Our sports and games in our territory is the second part of education and it is important to our government of Treaty 2 territory”, said host community Chief Woodhouse. As well, it was announced that the next Grand Council gathering would be hosted by Lake Manitoba First Nation in the summer of 2019; further notice will be continually provided as the details develop for the next gathering.

The Anishinaabe Agowidiiwinan - Treaty 2 is appreciative of all the work being done by the leaders, people and staff of the Treaty 2 Territory and is looking forward to the further work in creating the Treaty 2 Government. Kitchi-Miigwich to all, in unity we remain.
